Role Purpose
- Embed a return on investment (ROI) focus across your key stakeholder group, supporting the prioritisation of initiatives/capital allocation towards projects and initiatives with the greatest financial return
- Drive consistency on ROI measurement between initiatives through the creation of a standardized ROI Framework and establishment of insightful, data-driven and digestible financial analysis on the cost base (most notably CAPEX).
- Demonstrate an understanding of the CarTrawler business model, understanding how amendments and additions to the products or proposition impact financial metrics, and understand the knock-on impacts of decisions in one area on financial metrics in other business lines.
- Represent Finance on relevant cross functional forums and projects, building strong relationships with key stakeholders influencing decision-making by providing a financial perspective and focusing attention on opportunities with positive financial impact.
- Combine an analytical approach with innate curiosity to find data that delivers actionable insight for the Business, and communicate that data to stakeholders in a meaningful way that both informs and leads to action and results.
Reporting to: Snr Commercial Finance Manager
Main Accountabilities and Tasks:
- Create an investment appraisal framework enabling informed decision-making on strategic projects and investments, including defining how CarTrawler will measure return on investments, agree hurdle rates and outline a means by which key risks should be assessed.
- Embed and refine to the investment appraisal framework within the business, including creation of targeted communication plans for key stakeholders and creation of user-friendly support materials to educate and enable a sustained adoption across the business.
- Act as a trusted advisor to key decision makers within the business in reviewing and assessing the return on investment on projects as required, ensuring consistency in approach.
- Develop and implement an in-life cost tracking process to monitor the performance of investments against initial expectations, and communicate outcomes, insights, and recommendations to relevant stakeholders to inform ongoing and future decision-making.
- Lead in the review and refinement of the current R&D cost tracking process within CarTrawler with the goals of
- Identify the “to be state” with a focus on improving efficiency of the process and the accuracy of data and outcomes produced.
- Establishing a process that will service the ROI framework (e.g. identify “fast fail” projects whereby scope creep/changes have eroded original returns)
- Meet reporting requirements from various stakeholders (R&D spend by investment area; by function; by team)
- Own CAPEX reporting, providing relevant stakeholders with insightful reporting (e.g. drivers around fluctuations in R&D Capitalisation rate; understanding capacity levels and operational efficiency) and educating stakeholders on how spend is tracking (vs. Plan and prior year; full year outlook etc). Support the Product & Technology (P&T) function on OPEX as required.
- Support in the delivery of Car Trawlers annual Plan; supporting our P&T and Data Science functions in understanding plan initiatives to aid their resource planning/roadmap delivery; leading the assessment of R&D cost assumptions, challenging where appropriate; forming a view on level of return that is being captured in the Plan relative to investment.
Knowledge and Experience:
- Professional accountancy qualification (ACA/CIMA/ACCA) with minimum of 2+ years PQE; with 1+ years in a similar Finance Business Partnering/Commercial Finance role.
- Excellent financial acumen with ability to analyse complex data and processes, distilling actionable insights that drive value for key stakeholders.
- A self-starter with an innate curiosity for getting under the hood to understand underlying business drivers.
- Excellent communication skills with ability to distil complex data into concise, easy-to understand messages appropriate to the audience.
- Experience in preparing high-impact presentations and influencing the decisions of senior management.
- Abstract thinker: ability to think outside the box, see the bigger picture through consideration of future implications and scenarios and then use these to make recommendations or put forward new commercial opportunities that add real value.
